Blue Valentine (2010) - Starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams
Blue Valentine (Dir. Derek Cianfrance)
“I think it’s very romantic. Back home, they call it an anti-love story. But the filmmaker, when he first started writing this film 12 years ago, he said he wrote it as a reaction to all these films that he was watching, which seemed like the actors were carved out of marble and made in the image of gods.
He wanted to make a film that was made in the image of man, that embraces that our faults are what makes us special and human. And these characters in this film couldn’t embrace each other’s faults, because they were trying to live up to some idea of perfection that only exists in movies. So, I think that it is romantic to acknowledge the faults.”

Cindy: What did it feel like when you fell in love?
Gramma: Oh… oh dear, I don’t think I found it
Cindy: Even with grandpa?
Gramma: Maybe a little, in the beginning. He didn’t really have any regard for me as a person. You gotta be careful with that. You gotta be careful with the person you fall in love is worth it… to you.
Cindy: I never want to be like my parents. I know they must’ve loved each other at one time right? To just get it all out of the way before they had me. How do you trust your feelings when they can just disappear like that?
Gramma: I think the only way you can find out is to have the feeling. You’re a good person. You have the right to say I do trust. I do trust myself.
See: Movies that absolutely destroy me inside.
